Firefox 3
« on: April 19, 2008, 07:59:36 AM »
Beta 5 is out

It has been for a while actually, and I'm sure a few people here are already using it. I just bothered to get it now, and I have to say it's pretty good. Default theme looks a lot nicer, seems to run faster, smart bookmarks are extremely useful (remember your most visited pages etc).
I'd suggest anyone who doesn't have it yet at least downloads it and gives it a try.

I'm pretty sure I told my computer to download that next time I open FF... Looking forward to it?

It's actually really good. Unexpectedly, even. I figured that they would have ruined it by now (2.0 betas were impressive, as well, but the closer they got to releasing it, the more and more it slowed down) but they really haven't. Compatibility with already existing extensions is pretty strong. I've been told that the changes on OS X are a lot more relevant than the changes on PC (since they finally unified Firefox with the rest of the OS environment, etc.) but pages still load generally faster on PC.

Something about using Firefox still feels wrong on the Mac, but I'm sure that's not a problem on PC.

I've been using it for several months. Overall, it's better than 2. Most add-ons don't work and the address bar history search thing is a bit slower, but the new features are nice.

Most add-ons don't work

I use about 20 add-ons and all of them except for Growl Notifications have been fully compatible with Firefox 3 after I bypassed version checking. If you use Nightly Tester Tools, the only one I ever really had a big problem with besides Growl Notifications was Tab Mix Plus, and TMP has devbuilds that work fine with it.

OK, most themes and some addons. The only way I was able to get a lot of my addons to work was turning off update compatibility checking.

...That's because the developer hasn't updated the addon yet.  You can't blame the application for that.  Nothing would work that way.

Anyway, I've been using it since the day it released.  It's very good.  Everything seems pretty fast, the theme looks nicer, everything just seems more streamlined.  Haven't noticed the smart bookmark thing, but I don't use bookmarks.  I do love that URL autocomplete is listed by what you're visited most, though.

When did I blame the application? It goes with using a beta. >_>

I'll try it out, but me not liking sudden change all that much, I think I'll mostly stick to Netscape.

Wow I didn't realize we were living in 1995.

You made it sound like a step back for the application.  As long as you aren't blaming the app, it doesn't matter.

The 90's were the best years of my life.   :'(

OMG I love it, uninstalling Netscape now.  <3

Netscape died around ten years ago. Mozilla is all that remains.

You made it sound like a step back for the application.  As long as you aren't blaming the app, it doesn't matter.
Yeah, I didn't mean that. Just it's annoying if every time I update to a new beta half my addons break again.

Opera power.

This sentimental movie marathon has taught us one thing.

REALITY

Okay.  What is your guys' problem with the Netscape Navigator browser?  I've had both Firefox and Internet Explorer for the longest time, and neither of them were good enough for me to prefer one over the other.  My brother (YEAH,  He's part of the Geek Squad) suggest the Netscape Browser, and I loved it.  It combined the best of Firefox and Internet Explorer in a way that was user friendly for a complete technophobe like me.  IT'S ACTUALLY GOOD.

Well, from what I remember from the last time I used it, it was ridiculously slow. But my memory might be a little off. I mean, after all, it was over a decade ago. :')

Yeah, your memory sucks.  It's pretty quick.  As they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  >:(

But in this case, being broken is the equivalent of being dissatisfied. And I was never satisfied with Netscape. :x

If we lived under the "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" philosophy then we'd all be using Spectrums with 28k dial-up. Heck, we probably wouldn't even have computers.

Wait a second, what version of Netscape were you using?

Navigator 9 actually came out in the past two years, I believe, and it might have even been 2007. Actually, I think it was 2007.

Support for Navigator wasn't cut until last month.
It's been based on Firefox for a while now, though, so I don't know why you would be seeing too much difference.
