The Theme:
ZOO - Songs referring to animals, birds, insects, etc.

My Submission to the last.fm Group:

Well, to start this off, I originally spent a ridiculous amount of time explaining my mix tape and I accidentally navigated away from the page and lost everything I wrote.  I even had little links to each song and everything!  Sorry guys, but I'm not going through all that effort a second time.  My apologies.

I guess I am the first person to take the plunge and post their mix.  This is unexpected for me, as I normally send mine on the last hour of the last day of the month while hoping not to be kicked out of the group.  Also, I've been having some trouble piecing mixes together recently.  Especially for mix tapes where only the song titles correspond to the theme.  However, this month it all came together so nicely and I am quite pleased with the end result.

I present to you Animal Crossing:

(Not to be confused with the video game. Bleh.)

Download Link: CLICK

1 The Mae Shi - Lamb and the Lion
2 Baroness - A Horse Named Golgotha
3 Clues - Crows
4 Menomena - The Pelican
5 TV on the Radio - Love Dog
6 Matthew Good - Great Whales of the Sea
7 Savoir Adore - Animals in My Throat Make Me Sing
8 Bat for Lashes - Horse and I
9 Chaz Knapp - Le Chien Mort
10 Fleet Foxes - Meadowlarks
11 Ryan Adams - Nightbirds
12 Sia - Electric Bird
13 Domotic - There May Be a Tiger

This mix is mostly comprised of songs I overlooked on albums I really should listen to more.  Continue reading if you wish to find out more:

The first track, "Lamb and the Lion", is an exception.  It's a nice burst of energy to start off the mix and is a song I could probably listen to over and over again.  Not sure why, but I could.

Baroness follows and is possibly one of the few metal bands I am able to listen to.  I know one day I probably will enjoy metal, but I feel this band may be the one opening the door and broadening my horizons.

Clues is a band that I never really gave a chance, but rediscovered thanks to this month's theme.  Crows helps to make the front half of my mix sound slightly sinister. Menomena continues that slightly sinister sound (although, only slightly).

TV on the Radio is a band that I quite enjoy, but find that I usually get addicted to one track off of each of their album's and over-listen to it while neglecting all the other tracks.  When I relistened to "Love Dog" I was quite impressed and felt it was a good follow-up to Menomena.  Makes me wish I didn't listen to "Wolf Like Me" and 'DLZ" as much as I did and listened to their albums as a whole.

Matthew Good's latest effort, Vancouver, really underwhelmed me.  Typically, I am freakishly obsessed with his music and listen to each track off of each of his album's over 100 times before I am able to move on.  If only I kept my old last.fm account, I would really know how often I truly listened to him.  While I found that his album Vancouver didn't evolve his sound unlike all his previous albums, the tracks were still solid.  Plus, "Great Whales of the Sea" really does fit the theme.

Savoir Adore's The Adventures Of Mr. Pumpernickel And The Girl With Animals In Her Throat was a really charming, although extremely short, indie pop album that I fell in love with.  Any excuse to put their music in, I'll take it.

Bat for Lashes, Fleet Foxes, and Ryan Adams are all artists/bands that I have neglected, although probably have been included  in several mixes in this group by now.

Chaz Knapp may be only 20 years old, but his music is quite amazing and I am slightly tempted to make a short film with his music in the background.  While "Le Chien Mort" is not as strong as his other tracks, I felt this track mixes things up a bit and keeps the mix interesting.

Sia has been banished to only being played while I play online Facebook Scrabble games.  Although, for whatever reason, the only music I listen to during Facebook Scrabble games are either classic rock or something girly.  Never anything in between.  Don't question my Scrabble music tendencies.

Domotic is typically more fun. However, "There May be a Tiger" is a good closer for the mix and I don't think I could pick anything else.

If you download the mix, please let me know what you thought of it! Thanks!

Also, please let me know if the download link no longer works.  I'll gladly upload it again. Thanks.

Quiet, Orbital.  You aren't the boss of me.

For those who are interested (none of you, I'm sure), February's theme is: BABY I WANNA CRUSH YOUR SOUL INTO A THOUSAND PIECES.  Basically, an anti-Valentine's Day mix filled with songs about failing relationships and hatred.

If anyone here wants to give this a shot, feel free to do so.  I will post my mix at some point before February ends.

Also, just so you all are aware... I will still continue to post a mix each month even if nobody decides to check it out.  However, I may occasionally guilt one of you to listening to it if I get no feedback on Last.fm.

Ooooh, I like this theme.
I'll most likely give yours a go, Clyde.
Maybe put together one of my own as well.

This sentimental movie marathon has taught us one thing.

REALITY

I actually laughed pretty hard, in a public-computer lab, but it's 1:40 Am and there's like 10 people in here so it's almost normal.

There is a computer lab at my college that is open 24 hours.  Kind of awesome, actually.  I wonder how many people are there super late though.

Well, I found the anti-Valentine's day mix too hard.

March's listen up theme (songs that everyone should hear) was much easier however.  Basically, no theme as far as I'm concerned.

I will post my mix when it uploads.

For the Listen Up! theme, it would be fairly boring if I picked the songs I'd think everyone should hear seeing how I'd pick all my favourites.  Instead, I choose songs I think my dad should hear.  Most of them are songs he hasn't heard of but I think he would enjoy... with the odd curve ball here and there.

Yeah, I ran out of time to make a proper cover.  This random image I found on the Internet had to do.  At least it's badass.

1. Black Mountain - Stormy High
2. The Decemberists - The Abduction of Margaret
3. The Decemberists - The Queen's Rebuke/The Crossing
4. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes - Desert Song
5. Jets Overhead - It's a Funny Thing
6. Bend Sinister - The Same Things
7. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Baltimore
8. Matthew Good - Us Remains Impossible
9. The Rural Alberta Advantage - The Dethbridge in Lethbridge
10. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Woke Up Near Chelsea
11. Against Me! - Piss and Vinegar
12. The Weakerthans - The Prescience of Dawn
13. The Tragically Hip - Pretend
14. ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Luna Park
15. The Vines - Autumn Shade
16. Arcade Fire - My Body is a Cage

Unlike my last mix that had a variety of genres, this is all rock. I start it off with a few epic's that will surely grab my dad's attention ("Stormy High", "The Queen's Rebuke/The Crossing", "Desert Song"), followed up by the more softer, hypnotic, and relatively unknown indie rockers Jets Overhead.  This is followed up by the also unknown Bend Sinister, who can be a bit theatrical and over the top, but have awesome vocals and great songs that always put me in a good mood.  "Baltimore" follows suit and fits in well with the earlier tracks.

Things are soon sped up again with The Rural Alberta Advantage, Ted Leo, and Against Me!, all of which I have no clue how my father will react.  The Weakerthans track is a hidden gem with a great build up in the last minute or two.  "Pretend", "Luna Park", and "Autumn Shade" are the obligatory slow songs to balance out the mixtape, but I feel are all strong tracks.  Poppycrock sent me "Autumn Shade" by the Vines a few mixtapes back, and I absolutely loved it.  Now it's my turn to pass it on.

I found it was only appropriate to finish this mixtape with a bang, and found Arcade Fire's "My Body is a Cage" to fit the bill.

If you download the mix, please let me know what you thought of it! Thanks!

Also, please let me know if the download link no longer works.  I'll gladly upload it again. Thanks.

The theme for April is "GEEK".  I think Alex or Tina could make something amazing if they were up to it...

"You have free reign to make as geeky a mix as you like, e.g. songs in the key of B flat minor, and/or by bands with the same initials, and/or at a similar BPM, etc. Or you could widen the theme and mix together songs about geeks, computers or trains."

Hmm, maybe. Though I think if you combined any two of the mixdowns Sean's made, you've got the theme covered.
