The EU Loves Pirates
« on: April 11, 2008, 06:59:10 PM »
Recently there has been a reasonable number of calls from several European governments, including the British one, to have people monitored (most likely by their ISP's) for illegal downloads. Those found to be consistently pirating music and movies will basically have their internet access removed. Which would suck.

However, there was a vote from the European Parliament today which ruled that this shouldn't happen.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7342135.stm

It's not legally binding, and governments are still technically allowed to do what they want on this issue, but it's a good move for us file-sharers, seeing as it shows that the European Parliament, which can rule over all member state parliaments if it wants to, doesn't think that removing people's internet access is the way to go.

Isn't free downloading in Canada legal <_>?  Or is no one in this topic Canadian yet?

And go you, America still sucks.

From what I understand, downloading is legal. Only uploading is illegal.
I dunno, either way, it's not going to stop me. :X

Fuck, the rules change so much, I really don't know anymore. What I think as of writing this entry is that music downloads are still legal, though making profit off any one elses material is and always has been illegal (so it'll stay being free!) Mind you, I think that is only for music. I believe pirating games, dvds, etc, is still a no no. But I really don't know anymore.

There was a big thing in the 70s and 80s about people having the right to record TV shows on videotape. Now the media companies are still trying to control the whole process from recording to playback, not realizing that they've lost control over the distribution and such, and suing people isn't helping. It's not like artists get a huge percentage of the profits anyway. Meanwhile, encryption is being broken and colleges are defending file-sharing students. I saw this article recently.

Also, apparently Demonoid is back up.

Holy crap that's awesome news. Are all the accounts still there?
It's blocked at my school for sort of obvious reasons, so I can't check.

I don't like the idea of being monitored, it's just creepy and I like my privacy.  You're lucky on that one, Rosti.

Pirating though, I still don't like it.  It makes me feel horrible, for some reason.  Curse my morals. :(

Yeah, I can log in and it has all my old stats and everything.

Was your ratio the same?

Someone I talk to on AIM showed me their profile, and their ratio was 12 million. :X

That was me! Alex gave me an invite and at that point we were sharing a computer, so I got credit for all his uploads and I hadn't downloaded anything. The highest was in the hundred billions. As I just signed back on and my ratio is 4.37.

That's what I did. I have three different ISPs and NO bandwidth.
