I think it does fighting better than other fighting games, for basically every reason smash is an original series anyway.  Its king-of-the-hill aspect sets it apart enough as it is.

I thought Melee was a fantastic fighting game. If serious Brawl fighting is going to focus more on thought, spacing, etc., which it is, other fighting games that are actually designed to be serious (unlike Brawl) are going to dominate over Brawl entirely.

I don't think SSB was really ever going to be an actual fighting game. It was more "take this genre and put a Nintendo spin on it", like with all the Mario sports titles, which are quite different from your generic sports sim. Anything that makes SSB a better fighting game takes away from its roots, to some extent. It can either be a party game or a fighting game, it can't really be both.

Melee was a good concept that failed horribly.  I hate needing to be Fox/Falco/Marth/Samus/Sheik/Captain Falcon to even stand a chance.  Dying was way too easy and too much emphasis was put on edge guarding.

If Brawl was melee, with the slightly better recovery and roster of brawl, Brawl would be amazing.  More amazing :x.

Obviously not, as he doesn't have a favourable opinion on Brawl, and that Hylian is an amazing Samus.

This seems to be a recurring theme in this thread.  They tried to turn the game into more of a strategic fighter, and it doesn't feel right.  It's just not as hectic.  And as Alex pointed out, this means other fighters can crush it, because Brawl's no longer set as far apart from them.
