Yeah, if you do it as a hobby, what's the problem.
It's not they had too much time on their hands. It's just that they preferred to spend their free time doing this rather than doing anything else. I'm pretty certain these people either have jobs or some form of education to attend. I'm less certain they have a decent social life, but I'd say they probably do.
It annoys me when people say stuff like that, or that they have "no life". People assume that to do something like that you have to devour every waking moment with it. A few people think at school that all I do at home is play Tetris, and that's why I'm good. That isn't the case at all. I don't play Tetris every day, and when I do it's usually for less than half an hour. Maybe when I don't have school I'll play for an hour or so, but it's still far from the main thing I do every day. Just instead of the extra hour of TV they watch over me, I'll play Tetris. There's never been a time when I've thought "No, I won't go out with my friends today. I want to play Tetris instead".
Just because this has no apparent monetary income attached to it, people say they have no life, or too much time on their hands. Yet people hail men like Malmsteen and Vai as gods, when they really were people with too much time on their hands. Most of the extremely talented guitarists practised upwards of seven hours per day when they were younger (read: our age). They probably still do. But because they earn money from playing guitar, people overlook the fact that they literally had almost no life outside of playing guitar during their more formative years. Not that I'd say that in a derogatory way either.
