16-layer Blu-ray disk holds 400 GB of writable space.
« on: July 08, 2008, 07:05:10 PM »
Pioneer has finished making a 16-layer Blu-ray disk. Current Blu-ray disks are dual-layer, and hold 50 GB. These new Blu-ray disks could hold 8 copies of Metal Gear Solid 4. 400 GB may be enough to hold everything I've ever downloaded, ever.

Now, what the fuck would you want a 16-layer blu-ray disk for? That's like making something that runs at 500 FPS. It seems superfluous.

I'm not sure it'd even be something worth buying. Perhaps as some sort of external hard drive that you're going to basically just keep in a case somewhere so it's safe forever. Because I'd imagine that a scuff or scratch on that disc would wipe out a fair bit of data.

It seems like overkill now, but a time will probably come where it's important.

I remember when I was a kid and my buddy had 5 MB of memory.  We were totally wowed at the time.  :P

Seems pretty unnecessary for the time being.  It'll probably be worth having some time down the road, but it's better to just get an external hard drive for now.  The only advantage to something like a Blu-ray disc is portability, and I don't think anyone will need to take 400GB on the go any time soon.

As soon as someone invents denser storage, people find new types of media to fill it up. I don't think it'll be a problem.
