A Sad Day for Comedy
« on: June 23, 2008, 01:35:50 AM »

On Sunday, George Carlin died of heart failure.  He was 71 years old, and also an amazing comedian.  I loved his comedy.  I was even doing a tribute to him in my graduation speech.  Now it will have a bit more meaning behind it I suppose.

Oh man... His "Filthy Words" routine made me laugh the hardest I've probably ever laughed.

He'll be missed.

Aw, man. He made a lot of people laugh, and a lot of people angry, and I don't know which he'll be missed the most for. <3

One of the few things I've always wanted to do was go to one of his shows...

Isn't the title something of an oxymoron?

Lol, you're right :X.

I'm a noob, why does this guy sound familiar but I don't think I've actually seen him before?

If like his stuff, check out this little up and comer called "Dane Cook." You'll find some of his stuff REALLY familiar!

Carlin was a bit before my time, so I never really got into his stand up, but I think he's easily the most quoted comedian I've ever seen. While everyone does political humour now, he really made me believe he cared about what he was talking about, not just turning to the headlines for material.

He was a great man who lead a great life, and I'm sure he will continue to inspire for years to come.

That's an absolutely terrible insult to George Carlin. Dane Cook is not even in the same galaxy as funny.

I think he's referencing the fact that Dane Cook stole jokes from him.

I'm still a little depressed after hearing about it. At first I thought it was just a joke, but then it became a sad reality after checking several sources. There are not many comedians out there that can really make you laugh as genuinely as Carlin could. Sure, you'd giggle and chuckle, but the comic that can make you burst out laughing is becoming an extinct creature. It's really stressing to think about.

Also, Dane Cook is not that funny. Lewis Black is pretty good, though.

Yeah, it was a reference to the joke borrowing. But hey, who isn't inspired by Carlin? I've seen a lot worse as joke-theft goes.

As for Dane... I'm sorry, but he is still incredibly funny, and I say that 'cause I found him before the media did, so I don't give in to all the hate. But funny is very different from person to person. Laughter is what is important.

Dane Cook is a complete disgrace to stand up comedians. The number of jokes that he's just blatantly stolen from other comedians is unreal. I've seen him do so many jokes that are stolen that even when I don't recognise them from elsewhere, I still feel that they're pinched and I just never saw the original.
Sorry, but pretty much anyone could make a career as a comedian simply by stealing other people's material. I'd rather just watch the original thing.

I find it pretty amusing that most people I've met have a really radical opinion of Dane Cook. Either they love him or despise him.

He's funny because he steals a lot of jokes from comedians that aren't that brilliantly heard of, like Emo Phillips and Demetri Martin, but are fantastically funny. It's like he's a "Best Of" of niche comedians, which is why he's funny and people would like him.
Except the people who actually know about the original comedians hate him, because they know he's extremely successful simply by stealing other comedians' jokes. And to rub it in, he's more popular than the originals.

I think there's an unfair bias against Dane Cook. Sure, he steals a lot of jokes, so he's obviously can't be that great a comedian, but since he apparently steals jokes from lesser known comedians, I bet some of them have actually stolen jokes from him, and he just takes the shit for it.

I know for a fact that all of the ones I've seen have been him copying someone else. I mean, Emo Philips was a comedian in the 80's. It's just he's fallen mostly out of recognition now. There's a few by Demetri Martin he's stolen, which I know were recorded at least by Demetri first.
It wouldn't annoy me so much if they weren't almost identical. I mean, even the minor punchlines are the same as well as the main one.
It's like ripping off the dead parrot sketch, but instead of twisting it slightly and making it a car or something, he's just used a budgie instead of a parrot.

Ugh. But hey, as long as he makes people laugh.
