The Virtual Boy was a failure because the technology was too new to do much beyond giving people headaches. Cell phones were a success because people like to be in touch. I don't think this will herald an era of mainstream motion chairs or anything. There will always be people, and many, I think, who consider video games a form of escape worthy of being detached from, and not all-out immersive realism, and casual gamers won't bother. Meanwhile, the small group of realism fanatics will move on to full virtual reality, without having to sit and hold a controller. (Although with racing games it's not too far away.) And that still has a long way to go.
