Minecraft
« on: September 18, 2010, 09:13:52 PM »
Not sure how many of you know about this game, but I've been playing it for a while and just recently started playing it a lot more recently.

It's essentially a massive sandbox game, where you are plopped into a massive (essentially infinite) world, with nothing.  And from there you can do what you want.  You can explore, kill things, start digging, build a shelter, or start mining, or a combination of any of those.  But what's awesome is the sheer breadth of what you can create.  The game's Wiki has the crafting recipes for what you can make, and the way you can utilize these is awesome.  It's surprising fun and addictive.  Which is really surprising, since the game is still in Alpha.

But here's the best part.  It's free this weekend to get hold of the latest version of game (not the limited trial on the website).  See, Notch (the developer) tries to release new features or updates to the game every Friday.  Well, it got released a day late today, and the sheer number of people updating the game caused the Minecraft servers to slow to a crawl.  So Notch put the server in essentially a safe mode, keeping all basic things functioning, like saved games and user profiles.  However, he disabled the ability to register and purchase the game, instead opting to make it free to play this weekend.  Once he gets things fixed (He estimates by Monday) the game will go back to pay, so you'll have to buy it to keep playing (it's 10 Euros, so like $12-13).  But it;s a nice time to see if you actually like the game and would interested in buying it.  And Notch has noted that once you've purchased the game, you will never have to pay for another update or anything ever again.  So it's a pretty sweet deal. :)

If you're interest, just go to Minecraft.net and scroll down to your operating system.

If enough of you guys like it and grab it, we can dick around in the multiplayer (despite it being buggy).  It's actually quite fun. :x

I'm interested in the idea of a multiplayer part, so I'll be looking into this.

I tried it at a mate's house, and I doubt I'll get into it. It seems like the sort of game that needs a fair bit of time invested in it, and I don't really have the time for gaming any more except socially. I've been playing Sam & Max on and off, but not that much, and I bought Mass Effect ages ago and I've still yet to even install it, let alone play it.

usually people list reasons in order of importance, plus in terms of humor it's not that funny of a joke :x

There are lots of posts on this site that aren't funny and are meant to be jokes :x

Listing 4chan as a reason is something you see as rational?  It's not like it's hosted there or something

4chan, besides /b/ and the other more adult boards, is actually a pretty decent and interesting site, I feel.
I also feel that there's a lot of really really funny shit on /b/ :x
lastly, apologies for coming off as bitchy in my last post, as you can tell it was rather late and I was irked I couldn't sleep

/b/ can still be funny, it's just that genuinely funny, interesting and original shit tends to be very much needles in haystacks nowadays, and it's too popular and goes too fucking fast for me to bother keeping up with it because I'd have to be online all day. I still occasionally browse around, mostly one /a/ (obviously). Very much more of a fan of 7chan nowadays though just because I can log on once a day and pretty much read everything (when the servers are up at least), and it's got a better funny to shit ratio.

I haven't been on 4chan simply because I have a roommate and finding anything NSFW would be odd, but I have been to /b/ a few times.  There's too many "rate me etc" threads, and as rosti said, very needle-in-a-haystack.

I'm more of a /v/ guy, hence knowing about it from 4chan... :x

Think of it as a great big Lego set with really nasty monsters.

Now that I've played some of it I plan on getting it and playing it in chunks and building it in sections at a time.

It'll give me something to do between Halo and Eyepet.  :awe:

To be honest, I always got bored with Lego pretty quickly because it had infinite creativity and no objective. Main reason I loved Lego Technik in comparison was because you'd actually follow instructions and end up with a pretty cool car or something at the end of it.

That's just a personality difference when you think about it.  I'm the opposite: I like setting my own objective within an open creative framework and then just going at it.  I'm building a fortress right now for example.  No one's telling me how to do it or theat I have to it, I'm just doing it because I want to.

The nice thing is that once that goal is complete, I can set another and it can be anything I want...I feel either a watchtower or rollar coster coming on.
